Mount Vernon Nazarene University has announced the appointment of Dr. Doug Matthews as Division Chair of Christian Ministry, effective July 1, 2025. Dr. Matthews, a leader in theological education and ministry, returns to MVNU to guide future ministry leaders through academic excellence and church partnership.
Dr. Matthews previously served at MVNU for over ten years in roles such as Vice President for Enrollment and Student Development and professor of Theology and Philosophy. He was recognized for his classroom presence and strategic enrollment leadership, contributing to student development growth. "Carol (my wife) and I are most joyous, honored, and humbled concerning our returning to MVNU," said Dr. Matthews.
After leaving MVNU, Dr. Matthews served nearly a decade as Provost and Senior Vice President at Asbury Theological Seminary, overseeing academic programs and strategic initiatives. His leadership contributed to enrollment growth during challenging times for theological institutions.
Recently, he was Executive Pastor of Ministry Development at First Alliance Church in Lexington, Kentucky, where he aided in church growth and staff development. He also consulted for Asbury Theological Seminary and other institutions.

As chair, Dr. Matthews will shape curriculum and develop a ministry degree program rooted in the Wesleyan-Holiness tradition. "This opportunity is a very welcome... blending of teaching...and cutting-edge new program development," said Dr. Matthews.
Dr. Matthews holds a Ph.D. in Religion from Baylor University and an M.A. in Theological Studies from Wheaton College.
