Schnormeier Gardens in Gambier, Ohio, will once again open its gates to the public for its annual open house, running from June 6 to June 29, 2025. The gardens will be accessible Fridays through Sundays only, offering visitors a rare opportunity to explore this stunning 75-acre private property renowned for its Asian-inspired landscape design.
Owner Ted Schnormeier invites guests to experience the gardens’ unique features, which include sweeping manicured lawns, ten picturesque lakes, and a number of waterfalls. Visitors will also find striking architectural structures such as a Japanese teahouse, a serene garden house, a Chinese pavilion, and an elegant arched bridge. Throughout the property, guests can view an array of sculptures thoughtfully placed to enhance the scenery.
Although the gardens have been under continuous development since 1996, the property also includes a Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired home completed in 1994. This private residence, however, is not included in the public tour.
Those wishing to visit must reserve tickets in advance at schnormeiergardens.org. Two time slots are available each day at 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. A $50 parking fee per car applies. Groups arriving by bus should notify organizers in advance by calling (740) 427-2612.
The tours are self-guided, giving visitors the freedom to explore the diverse terrain, which includes woodlands, meadows, streams, and lakes. Because the paths are not paved, comfortable clothing and sturdy walking shoes are recommended.
Guests will begin their visit at the Welcome Center on Laymon Road, where they can find restrooms and pick up a brochure with a map of the grounds. Photography is welcome, but pets are not permitted.
