Marissa Kunes and Evan Hodkinson were recognized with the 2024-25 Service Above Self Awards during the 65th MVNU Commencement ceremonies on May 3. The award is given to graduating seniors who have shown exceptional service both on and off campus, embodying MVNU’s motto: "To seek to learn is to seek to serve."

Kunes, a Chemistry major with a pre-med concentration, has been active in various service roles. She has led belong groups, traveled to Guyana with FaithWorks for community service, and volunteered at Starting Point Pregnancy and Family Resource Center. She also served as captain of the Women’s Reserve soccer team, assistant in the Chemistry Department, and co-president of the Chemistry Club. Dr. Carrie Beal, Professor of Biology, praised her involvement: "In the global community, Marissa is actively involved in service opportunities...She deeply cared about the success of her peers and was willing to devote numerous hours each week."

Hodkinson, a Biology major with a pre-med concentration, held leadership roles such as belong group leader and life group leader. He was also team captain for men’s cross-country and track teams and served as student Vice President for Spiritual Life. Additionally, he is a Naia All-American and youth group leader at his local church. Dr. Paul Madtes Jr., Professor of Biology, commended him: "Just as Jesus is a servant, so too, Evan is learning to be a servant at the deepest level of his heart...His service enabled both faculty and students to experience a learning environment that was exceptional."

Both recipients exemplify MVNU's commitment to service through their academic journey.
