Mount Vernon Nazarene University (MVNU) recently celebrated Arbor Day by planting two Sweetbay Magnolia trees on its campus. The initiative was led by the university's Campus Tree Advisory Committee, which plans to add a Bald Cypress tree later in May. This event is part of MVNU's commitment to sustainability and enhancing campus biodiversity.

Tim Radcliffe, Chair of the Campus Tree Advisory Committee, said, "Our Campus Tree Advisory Committee exists to cultivate sustainability and stewardship on MVNU’s campus." He emphasized the importance of replacing trees that are removed to maintain the campus's health and beauty.

The new plantings replace invasive species that were previously removed. Sweetbay Magnolias are known for their fragrant white blossoms, while the Bald Cypress will contribute unique texture to the landscape.

Student participation in this year's planting event has doubled since 2023, showing increased engagement in sustainability efforts. The committee comprises nine members, including faculty, staff, students, and a community representative.

Radcliffe outlined future plans: "The Committee will continue to plan for the care of trees on campus, which includes removals of damaged or diseased trees, as well as planting new or replacement trees."

MVNU has been recognized as a Tree Campus by the Arbor Day Foundation’s Tree Campus Higher Education program for six consecutive years. The university offers education to nearly 2,100 students from various states and countries.
