The Knox Community Jazz Orchestra is set to perform at the Woodward Opera House on March 21. The concert, titled "Shake That Cabin Fever," will mark the end of winter and welcome spring with a selection of classic and new jazz arrangements. Admission is free, though donations will be accepted.
Ted Buehrer, leader of the jazz orchestra, described the event as "a hearty taste of musical comfort food that we can all savor, remembering winter and welcoming spring." He expressed enthusiasm for performing at the Woodward Opera House, noting its "intimate warmth."
The program will feature big-band classics such as "In the Mood" by Glenn Miller Orchestra and Tommy Dorsey's theme song "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You." It will also include Sammy Nestico's "Basie Straight Ahead," Kenny Garrett's "Happy People," Joni Mitchell’s "Both Sides Now," and an arrangement by Buehrer of Chopin’s "Nocturne."
The twenty-member ensemble consists of music educators from Knox County and surrounding areas, along with professional musicians and skilled amateurs. The group has previously performed at various local events including Ariel Foundation Park and Kenyon College.
Founded in 2017 by Buehrer, a music professor at Kenyon College, the orchestra continues a local big-band tradition. The group has gained a following through performances at community events and benefit concerts.
