The year 2024 in Knox County was marked by significant developments, with the Frasier Solar project dominating local discourse, a historic football season for Danville and a key election.
Frasier Solar project
The Frasier Solar project sparked one of the most contentious debates in Knox County recent years, with widespread opposition from local residents.
Concerns over industrial solar development led to the election loss of Tom Collier's seat on the Knox County Board. Collier, a former state representative, had been a board member since 2024.
In the 2024 election, Drenda Keesee defeated Collier and Barry Lester was elected, adding two more anti-solar voices to the board, further shifting the board’s stance.
Two Ohio Power Siting Board meetings saw vocal opposition from the public, with the project's future now uncertain as legal challenges move forward, potentially influenced by the court's interpretation of public interest in such developments.
Danville football
On the sports front, the Danville Blue Devils football team had a historic season, finishing with a 12-3 record and making an emotional run to the Division VII state semifinals.
The team, led by standout players Aidan Burke and Cyren Wallace, built a commanding 22-12 halftime lead against Hillsdale, only to fall short 25-22.
Despite the loss, Coach Matt Blum celebrated the team’s legacy, which included a third consecutive regional championship and a semifinal appearance for the first time since 2017, inspiring future Blue Devils squads.
Weckesser elected Sheriff
In local government, Daniel J. Weckesser, former Danville Police Chief, won the GOP primary for Knox County Sheriff with 46% of the vote, defeating William Shaffer and Wayne Noggle.
Weckesser, who takes over from David Shaffer who filled the role from 2013 to 2024, emphasized a tough-on-crime approach, particularly focusing on drug dealers and strengthening law enforcement support.
