Gian Carlo Menotti's "The Telephone" will be presented by the Music Department at Mount Vernon Nazarene University on Friday, December 6. The performance is free and open to the public.

According to a Mount Vernon Nazarene University news release, the short one-act comic opera will begin at 7 p.m. in the R.R. Hodges Chapel/Auditorium.

The release describes "The Telephone" as a lighthearted exploration of how modern distractions—specifically the telephone—can interfere with meaningful communication. The opera features senior Logan Davis, who will also direct the performance, alongside sophomore Madigan Kennedy. Charla Drybrgh will accompany them.

The news release provides a synopsis of the opera: Ben visits Lucy at her apartment intending to propose before leaving on a trip. However, she is so preoccupied with telephone conversations that he cannot get her attention long enough to ask his question. He unsuccessfully attempts to cut the telephone cord when she leaves the room. Eventually, Ben has to leave to catch his train without proposing but tries one last time by calling Lucy from a phone booth on the street. This time he manages to propose, and she accepts. The pair share a romantic duet over the phone, and the opera concludes with Lucy ensuring Ben remembers her number.
