To the Editor:

Most of us, whether in our personal lives or at work, value people who face problems with maturity, compassion, competence, and an openness to compromise. These are people who win our trust even during conflicts. They’re the problem-solvers, the adults in the room.

Many Americans are appalled by Donald Trump because he embodies the exact opposite of these values. He’s not interested in competent governance. It’s telling that so many of the top officials who worked in Trump’s administration, including highly respected military men, were shocked by his arrogance, ignorance, and meager attention span. Moreover, in lock step with Project 2025, he wants the power to fill government offices with loyal extremists, replacing professionals whose experience and expertise we rely on for countless public needs. That’s not to mention the extreme-MAGA assault on reproductive freedom and the sanctity of the doctor-patient relationship.

Nor does Trump have any interest in the hard work of problem-solving. On the complex issue of immigration, for example, he bullied fellow Republicans into killing a bipartisan compromise. He couldn’t stand the idea of a “win” for fellow Americans whom he considers his enemies. As usual, he chose himself over the public good. And so, instead of working to find realistic solutions to a complicated problem, he continues to rant about immigrants “poisoning our blood.”

The ranting is typical. Trump seems incapable of mature or compassionate thought. He insults, meanders incoherently, repeats bizarre conspiracy theories, and stokes fear with ludicrous visions of catastrophe. Above all, he lies – about everything from crime, to the economy, to his role in inciting the January 6 insurrection. Trump’s act is like a nonstop, rambling temper tantrum.

Along with so many others, including a good many Republicans and former Trump voters, I’m sick of the hysteria. I’ll vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. I urge others to join me in choosing maturity and common sense, compassion and hopefulness, and a commitment to governing with competence. Kamala Harris and Tim Walz are the kinds of leaders we need and deserve.
