Leroy Eugene Wolford, 98, of Ontario passed away Friday, July 26, 2024 at the Laurels of Mt. Vernon.
Leroy enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 where he served in the Pacific Theater of World War II. He sailed aboard the USS Indiana serving in six of the nine campaigns of this ship. He participated in many of the historic moments of WWII that changed the world forever. Once Leroy returned home he worked at Cooper-Bessermer for 28 years. He then moved to Mansfield and worked at Westinghouse where he met his wife, Margaret Ashworth. Leroy enjoyed growing a large garden and planted many tomatoes each year. He was a proud veteran, recently featured in the local TV station as one of the few remaining WWII veterans.
Leroy is survived by three sons, Dwight (Mary) Wolford, Jerry (Rhonda) Wolford, and Larry (Chris) Wolford; a brother, John (Mona) Wolford; grandchildren, Julie (Roger) McFarland, Jennifer (Jon) Taylor, Matthew Wolford, Tiffany (Seth) Roland, Harold Wolford, Lance (Jody) Patterson, and Jenny (Mark) Cook; great-grandchildren, Jadriana Fowler, Blake Wolford, Skylar Poland, Dalton Poland, Quentin Wolford, McKenzie Cook, Ryland Patterson, and Chloe Patterson; step-grandchildren, Mark Ashworth and Tammy Wilson; and many cherished family and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Wolford; mother of his children, Francis “Louise” Matthews; daughter, Amy Wolford; brothers, Rollin Wolford and Glenn Wolford; sisters, Maxine Dickens and Katherine DeBoard; and stepson, Jerry (Heidi) Ashworth.
Visitation was held at Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 Lexington Springmill Road South, Ontario Wednesday, July 31, 2024 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. A Funeral Service took place at Wappner Funeral Directors-Ontario Thursday, Aug. 1, 2024 at 11 a.m. Burial followed at Mansfield Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Wounded Warriors.
