Three Mount Vernon spellers headed to county bee

MOUNT VERNON – Mount Vernon Middle School will send three students to the Knox County Spelling Bee on Jan. 11. The trio won their recent grade-level competitions within the district.

Jacob Hawkins prevailed from a field of 19, correctly spelling “steeds” to win the sixth-grade title. Cassara Arcilla was runner-up.

Jace DeWitt was the seventh-grade winner, besting 18 other contestants by correctly spelling “indignant” after seven rounds. Molly Emig was runner-up.

The eighth-grade title went to Noah Corrigan. He correctly spelled “minimus” to best a field of 21 others after five rounds. Runner-up honors went to Mason Tocheff.

Hawkins, DeWitt and Corrigan will join spellers from the other county schools for the grades 5-8 county bee at 7 p.m. in the Mount Vernon High School

auditorium. The Knox County commissioners will serve as judges.

Taylor Gingery, the Knox Educational Service Center’s gifted and talented coordinator, oversees the local bees. She will be the pronouncer at the county

bee.

The Knox ESC facilitates the county bee with financial support from the Rotary Club.
