DANVILLE – Kathleen Marie (Colopy) Durbin, 83, passed away at 3:00 am Friday November 10, 2023 with family by her side at Danbury Senior Living in Mount Vernon after a two year battle with Alzheimer's disease.
“Kate,” as she was known to family and friends, was a devoted wife of 65 years, proud mother of four and grandmother of eight, and a friend to many. Born in Danville, Ohio in 1940 to Charles C. and Lucille A. (Nommay) Colopy, she grew up on her parents’ farm at the edge of town, attended Danville High School and married her long time sweetheart, Paul J. Durbin, shortly after her graduation in August 1958. That same year, they purchased Durbin’s Sohio service station, moved in to the home next door, and steadily grew their family and business over the next several decades. For many years, Kate also served Danville Local Schools as a substitute bus driver and cafeteria worker. Upon retiring, they relocated to Mount Vernon and became parishioners of St. Vincent Catholic Church.
She is preceded in death by her husband three weeks earlier, and siblings Jacqueline Shackle, Lawrence Colopy and Charles Colopy, Jr. She is survived by her children James (Angie) Durbin, Joseph (Deborah) Durbin, Marilou (Al) Fritz, John (Kathleen) Durbin, eight grandchildren, as well as her sister, Norrita Hurley.
Her family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the many caregivers for their extraordinary care for their mother during her final months, including the staff of Danbury Senior Living Center and Gentiva Hospice.
A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 13, 2023 at St. Luke Catholic Church in Danville. Father Jim Colopy will officiate. Visitation will be available in the church vestibule from 9:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. prior to mass. A brief interment ceremony at St. Luke Cemetery will be observed immediately after mass, followed by a reception at St. Luke Community Center. Open to all.
Memorial donations are suggested to the Gentiva Foundation (112 Harcourt Road, Mount Vernon, Ohio 43050).
