Josh Byers of the Blue Devils is the Mount Vernon Athlete of the Week | Coach Matt Blum

Josh Byers is having a fantastic season for the Danville football team, and last week the junior captain was able to help stifle a strong Springfield offense in the playoffs. For that reason, Byers is the Mount Vernon Athlete of the Week.

Byers is a two-way starter for the Blue Devils, playing middle linebacker on defense and tight end on offense. He is a first team All-KMAC player who Coach Matt Blum has nothing but high praise for.

“He’s a kid who never missed a single workout in the off-season,” said Blum. “Josh is a very high character kid and great in the classroom as well.”

Last week in the 32-6 playoff win over Springfield he tallied 23 tackles with four for a loss, and also got to the quarterback for 2.5 sacks.

“Josh was key for us making play after play against Springfield strong rushing attack,” Blum said. “Their offense who averages above 200 rushing yards a game was limited to under 40 total rushing yards. This is due to largely Josh’s performance on Saturday night.”

Byers has put together a top notch season on both sides of the ball. He leads the team with 141 tackles with 10 for a loss. On offense has has more than 200 total yards and six touchdowns. He has nine catches for 114 yards and four scores, while also running 10 times for 84 yards and two touchdowns.

Congratulations to Josh Byers and good luck against Loudonville in the semifinals!
