Recreation Director Jeff Derr | City of Mount Vernon

Mount Vernon has hired Jeff Derr as its new recreation director, replacing Tanner Salyers who resigned to accept the position of Safety-Services director for the city. Derr officially began his new role on October 24th, according to a news release from the City of Mount Vernon.

“Jeff is coming on board just as the City is expanding its recreation opportunities beyond just the ball sports, although those of course will remain a big part of the job. He will play a major role in developing and updating our parks master plan, which is all about providing our residents with more and better ways to have fun as the City grows,” Mayor Matthew Starr said, according to a news release from the City of Mount Vernon.

Derr brings a wealth of experience to his new position. He graduated from Mount Vernon Nazarene University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in sports management and exercise studies, as well as a Master of Arts in Education in health and physical education, K-12. With over 13 years of experience as a certified parks and recreation professional, Derr has a strong background in the field. He began his career as a recreation specialist for Grove City, Ohio, and then spent 10 years as a recreation assistant manager for the Recreation and Parks Department of Columbus, Ohio. Currently, Derr also works as a membership sales representative for Knox Community Hospital's Connections Fitness Center.

"I am very excited to be back in my hometown and look forward to developing our community’s Recreation Department to help grow and enhance the quality of life for our residents,” Derr said, according to a news release from the City of Mount Vernon.

With Derr's experience and passion for recreation, Mount Vernon is confident that he will successfully lead the city's efforts in providing diverse and enjoyable recreational opportunities for its residents.
