The Centerburg volleyball team recently won the Knox Morrow Athletic Conference for the first time since 2012, and a big part of that is due to the strong play of Stella Weisbrod, who is the Mount Vernon Athlete of the Week.
Weisbrod has been one of the best players in the conference all season, and last week she led the team with 13 kills to beat the KMAC co-champions Fredericktown in a sweep. The senior hitter used her hard slams and perfect placement of kill shots to take charge in the win. She had an ace and also led the team with 12 digs.
Although the team lost 3-1 to St. Francis DeSales to finish out the regular season, she still had a terrific night on the court. Weisbrod recorded a team high 14 kills, while also playing solid defense with 19 digs. She had an ace from the serving line as well.
In all last week she had a hit percentage of .323. This year she has 239 kills, 224 digs, 53 aces and a hit percentage of .305.
“Stella was pivotal in our play this week, she led our team to a conference title for the first time in 11 years,” said Coach Abigail Boudinot. “Stella is an aggressive offensive player and an intelligent defense player. As a senior, she will be big shoes to fill.”
The next step is for Weisbrod to push the team to victory in the state tournament. They have a first round bye as the number three seed, but will be taking on the winner of No. 7 Bishop Rady and No. 17 Utica on Oct. 21.
Congratulations to Stella for her excellent play last week and good luck in the state tournament!
