Centerburg (18-3, 11-1) finished the regular season tied for first with Fredericktown (16-4, 11-1) in the Knox Morrow Athletic Conference (KMAC) by taking a conference win over the Freddies last week in a sweep. This was the first time since 2012 Centerburg has won the conference.
Stella Weisbrod has been one of the best players in KMAC this season, and had a 13 kill performance in a 3-0 win over conference rival Fredericktown.
Katelyn Johnson put the Trojans up 10-2 with an ace, and Molly Kain made it 16-9 with an ace of her own. Julia Orndorf won the set on a kill to go up 25-15.
In set two it was a back-and-forth matchup but the Trojans took a tight 25-23 win. It was knotted at 9-9 but Weisbrod slammed a kill out of the reach of all Freddy players to go up by one. The Freddies tied the set 11-11, but Weisbrod struck again with a kill to give the Trojans a point advantage. They tied the set again at 14-14 and 15-15 but Julia Orndorf and Elana Joering each had kills to put Centerburg up. Katelyn Johnson served an ace to go up 24-23 and then Orndorf recorded a kill for the win.
Set three was a 25-16 win for the Trojans, who sealed the win and were able to hand the Freddies their first conference loss. Joering and Riley Skillman had key blocks in the set. The win secured the part ownership of first place in the conference.
Weisbrod led the team in kills and also had an ace and a team high 12 digs. Kennedi Glenn had 10 digs and 10 assists. Clara Johnson recorded 13 assists to lead the setting. Julia Orndorf added nine kills in the win.
Centerburg dropped the final match of the regular season 3-1 to St. Francis DeSales (9-12, 0-4) in a non-conference matchup. The Trojans lost set one 25-16 but came back to tie the match with a 25-20 set two win. Set three was a 25-18 loss and they fell 25-22 in the last set.
Weisbrod tallied 14 kills, 19 digs and one ace. Kennedi Glenn had 20 assists and Clara Johnson added 11 assists. Glenn also had seven kills and 15 digs. Katelyn Johnson posted a team high 21 digs.
The No. 3 Trojans have a first round bye in the Division III Central 1 Sectional/District round of the state tournament. Next up is the winner of No. 7 Bishop Ready and No. 17 Utica on Oct. 21 at 5 p.m. with location to be announced.
