Dorothy Carol Mauk Swinehart, 94, formerly of Mount Vernon, Ohio, passed away in Topeka, Kansas on September 5, 2023, after a long battle with Alzheimer's. Dorothy was born at her grandparents' home in East Fultonham, Ohio on August 6, 1929, to Clayton A. Mauk and Thelma C. Moore Mauk.
Dorothy graduated from Lash High School in Zanesville, Ohio, Class of 1947. During high school, she worked at Newberry's dime store. After graduation, she worked in the offices of Ohio Porcelain Co. and Prudential Insurance. After her children were older, she worked at Olson's Hallmark and retired from Mount Vernon Nazarene University.
On September 16, 1950, she married Noel C Swinehart, who passed in 2009. They were married for 58 years. They had two children, Caroline A. Mitchell (John Graubner) of Surprise AZ and Todd C of Topeka KS.
She was a member of Beulah United Methodist Church and a past member of Psi Iota Xi sorority. She enjoyed playing cards and bingo with friends, camping, traveling, going to water aerobics and exercise classes, and snowbirding at their Florida home for more than 20 years.
Surviving are her children, her granddaughter Lauren (Kraig), two great-grandchildren, Colin and Ian, her sister-in-law Jean Mauk, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brother James “Jim” Mauk, sister G. Joan Rucker, brother-in-law Albert “Ace” Rucker, nephew Mark Rucker, and her in-laws Carl and Carrie Swinehart.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be sent to the Alzheimer's Association or Beulah United Methodist Church, 8261 Columbus Rd, Mount Vernon, Ohio 43050.
Friends may call Wednesday from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home, 201 Newark Road, (State Route 13) Mount Vernon, Ohio 43050. Funeral services will follow at 7:00 p.m. with Pastor Thom Fowler officiating. Graveside services will be on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at Highland Cemetery, Glenford, Ohio.
