MOUNT VERNON – Paul David Eberwine, 88 of Mount Vernon, passed away on April 8, 2023. He was born May 5, 1934, to the late Fred J. and Laura V. (Garber) Eberwine in Fresno, Ohio.
He was the fourth oldest of six kids and grew up on the family farm, where he and his brothers were always getting into trouble. He was married to the love of his life, Mary Jo (Talbot) Eberwine, for 63 years.
Before becoming a full-time educator, he worked as manager of the Mount Vernon Kroger store. He retired from the East Knox school system in 1988, having served as a vocational agriculture and science teacher, as well as principal. After his retirement from East Knox, he worked as a real estate agent for various local companies. Paul attended Ohio State University, receiving his Bachelor of Science in agriculture in 1956, and Master of Science in education in 1967. He served his country as a major in the Air Force, where he went to pilot school before switching to becoming an education officer, followed by a decade in the Air Force Reserves during which time he did interviews for candidates for the Air Force Academy. He also served his community as vice-chairman of the Morris Township Zoning Commission. He was active in the Elks, Moose and Masons for several years. He and our mother were lifelong advocates for those with intellectual disabilities. There isn’t a person whom he met who didn’t become a friend and was subjected to his wry sense of humor. Emily Dickinson wrote, “Unable are the loved to die. For love is immortality,” so it is with our Dad.
Paul is the beloved father to his daughter and her husband, Paula Jo and Martin of Blubaugh, Danville; and his son and his wife, James and Joan-Marie Eberwine of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He has three grandchildren, Brock (Robin) Blubaugh of Kentwood, Michigan; Grace Eberwine of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania and Paul Eberwine of Princeton, New Jersey; and two great-grandchildren, Trent and Lila Blubaugh; brother, James (Mildred) Eberwine; sister, Marilyn Wyler and sister-in-laws, Emily Eberwine and Bonnie Eberwine.
He was preceded in death by his wife, brothers, Bob and Don Eberwine; sister, Ruth Welling; grandchildren, Brad and Brett Blubaugh; brothers-in-laws, Marquis Welling and Dean Wyler and sister-in-law, Marcella Eberwine.
Memorial contributions may be made to: The American Red Cross.
