Within four days, Mount Vernon Nazarene’s men’s basketball team saw two players reach the 1,000-point career milestone.
On Jan. 7, Kade Ruegsegger hit the mark against Spring Arbor, and on Jan. 11, MVNU senior Kyle Kegley scored his 1,000th career point to join Ruegsegger, who was honored before the game. Kegley scored 15 points and grabbed six rebounds in leading the Cougars (10-7, 3-4 CL) to a 71-69 win over Taylor University (10-8, 4-4 CL) in Ariel Arena.
In the back-and-forth game, Kegley hit his 1,000 in the first half, though Taylor held a 46-44 lead after 20 minutes. Each team held the lead several times throughout the game and Taylor had a chance at an open three in the finals ticks, but the shot, rebound and putback clanged off the iron and the Cougars prevailed.
Trent Koning led the Cougars with 17 points and had four steals in the win.
In MVNU’s 91-70 win over Spring Arbor on Jan. 7, Ruegsegger needed 13 points to hit 1,000 points for his career. Ruegsegger hit the milestone with a three with 11:25 remaining in the second half. He finished with 13, and added 13 more against Taylor.
