Mount Vernon 52, Centerburg 50 (OT)

Despite five 3-pointers hit by Lady Trojan Kennedi Glenn, the Mount Vernon Lady Jackets stormed back with a big fourth quarter, including nine points by Brooklyn Thayer, and held off Centerburg in overtime, 52-50, on Nov. 19.

Kenlee Fairall and Avery Glenn each hit threes for Centerburg in the first, but the Lady Jackets held a 12-9 lead with scoring from four players, paced by Kymber Bell’s five. Glenn hit her first two threes and Kayla Larimore sank a pair of deuces in the second, and Centerburg held MV to five points to take a 20-17 lead at the half.

Glenn drained two more threes in the third and was supported by Clara Johnson, who hit a three and a two-pointer as Centerburg increased the lead to 33-27 entering the fourth. Mount Vernon’s 10 points came from Bell with five, Thayer with four and Liz Miller with a free throw.

MV outscored the Lady Trojans 20-14 in the fourth for a 47-47 tie at the end of regulation. Four Lady Jackets chipped in to share 20 points, with Thayer netting nine and Reese Lepley sinking five. Glenn sank seven of Centerburg’s 14 points in the fourth.

Glenn nailed her final three in the fourth as did Fairall, but the magic ran out in overtime, as Centerburg was held to only three free throws, while Mount Vernon buzzed the court for five, with Lepley sinking three free throws and Kaitlyn Thomson nailing a deuce.

“I was really impressed with our group’s willingness to fight to the end,” Mount Vernon coach Nate Short said. “We could’ve quit with the deficit we faced in the fourth quarter. Yes, we had some great individual play. Brooklyn (Thayer) with a double-double. Kymber (Bell) with a double-double. But, what made that game so special was how unselfish we played as a unit. I could list something each member of the team did to contribute to the win.”

Thayer scored 17 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead Mount Vernon, and Bell had 13 points and 11 rebounds. Lepley added 10 points. Glenn finished with 15 points for Centerburg, and Johnson hit 13.

“We were certainly happy to leave with a win but have a lot of work to do to keep growing and improving going forward,” Short said.
