GAMBIER – P. Jean Fowler, 80, passed away on Thursday morning, Oct. 27, 2022, at her home near Gambier with her family by her bedside.
Friends may remember her for her easy smile. Even as a little girl, she was nicknamed “Smiley” by the local neighborhood grocery store owner. If you asked her what she was most proud of in her life, she would not hesitate to say her family. She married her high school sweetheart, George, on Jan. 4, 1964. Together, they raised three amazing children, sons Greg (Karen) Fowler of Naples, FL, and Dan (Julie) Fowler of Mount Vernon; and daughter Teri (Lance) Hill of Mount Vernon. All of her grandchildren were the stars in her galaxy, Sarah Fowler of Minot, SD, Katie Fowler of University Place, WA, and Josh Hogg of Mount Vernon; step grandchildren, Dustin Schlairet and Ashley Plunkett of New York City. She is also survived by her brother, Chuck (Robin) Doup of Newark; and nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.
Jean and her husband were life members of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association (GWRRA) where many long-time friendships were formed, and much fun was had. They were officers of their local Chapter Y, the Ohio District Team, and the Region D Team over their membership. They loved riding a motorcycle in every one of the 48 lower states over their riding career. Jeanie even got her motorcycle trike license when she was in her 70s so she could ride her own ride. She and George competed in rally bike contests for fun. George usually won and Jeanie survived, smiling while going through the paces.
She really enjoyed sports and cheering on her grandchildren in their competitions, and the Buckeyes, of course. Tennis was her sport as she played up until her death with her girlfriends. She cherished her time on the court and felt blessed to be part of this fun foursome.
Jeanie was part of The Clatter Club group made up of eight women who went through Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic School together. Their children became instant nieces and nephews. These sister-friends shared all the ups and downs of life until the end.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Homer and Irene (Buckingham) Doup; brothers, Dick (Bonnie; Sharon) Doup, Larry (Diana) Doup; brother-in-law, Robert (Judy) Fowler; and sister-in-law, Patricia (John) Fowler.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until the time of a memorial service celebrating the life of Jean at 1 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 31, at the Snyder Funeral Homes, Lasater Chapel, 11337 Upper Gilchrist Road, Mount Vernon with Rev. Father PJ Brandimarti presiding. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Mount Vernon.
