FREDERICKTOWN – Fredericktown First Presbyterian Church is starting a new mission called the Friday Cafe.
Starting Friday, Sept. 23, the church will offer free soup and fellowship to anyone who is interested every other Friday.
"We are a church with many retirees who want to serve the community and happen to be very good at making soup," church member Susan Cunningham said. "We have had a booth at the Tomato Show since the beginning and are famous for our ham and bean soup. We have recently added chili and chicken noodle to our selection.
"The church envisions a need for food and a place to gather this fall when the government subsidies are discontinued," Cunningham said. "Our mission is to provide a meal and a welcoming environment for seniors and those in the community who may not qualify for other government programs. Initially, the cafe will operate every other Friday at noon from September through May. Our intent is to be as environmentally friendly as possible, using china and silverware rather than disposable products. After lunch, we plan to keep the coffee pot on for conversation and playing cards and games. The potential is endless for this new mission."
Fredericktown First Presbyterian Church is at 17 S Main St, Fredericktown. The Friday Cafes will be free and open to the public, with donations welcome.
