On Friday, Aug. 26, 2022, Carol Louise Reiss, loving wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away at the age of 81. Carol was born on April 25, 1941, in Mount Vernon to Lawrence and Gertrude (Harding) McGough.
Carol graduated from Howard High School in 1959. She met the love of her life, John L. Reiss, at the Big Bear Grocery store, where they both worked after high school. They married on Nov. 13, 1965. Together they raised two children, Mark and Nancy Jo. After raising her children, she was employed by Mount Vernon Nazarene University. Carol was a member of the First Christian Church for several decades, where she served as a deaconess. She later attended the United Congregational Church.
Carol had a creative side. She enjoyed sewing, quilting and embroidering. For many years, when her children were young, she sold her creations at craft fairs around Knox County. She was an active member of the Knox County Quilt Guild for several years.
Carol is survived by her husband, John; a son, the Rev. Mark (Lisa) Caldwell-Reiss of Berea, KY; a daughter, Nancy Jo (Larry) Speece of Mount Vernon; a sister, Irene (Ron) Arnholt; a brother, Harold McGough; grandsons Zachary and Dallas Hammond; two great-granddaughters, Zoey and Liliana Hammond; and two nieces and several nephews.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Gertrude, and her father, Lawrence; brothers Larry and Jim McGough; and a niece, Wanda Jean (McGough) Smith.
The family will be observing a private family burial.
