MOUNT VERNON – Phyllis Ann Vernon, 84, went to be with her Lord and Savior on July 29, 2022, at Edgewood Assisted Living in Hermantown, Minnesota. She was born in Mount Vernon, Ohio, on March 31, 1938, to Leonard and Gladys Coon. Phyllis and her late husband of 64 years, Jim, had retired in Arcadia, Florida, in 2012. Jim passed away in Arcadia in September of 2020. Phyllis then came to Minnesota on April 1, 2022, to be closer to her daughter, Tori.

Phyllis was a member of the Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ in Arcadia beginning in 2012 to April 2022. She was also a long-time member of the Apostolic Christian Church in Mount Vernon from 1976-2012. She was involved in Ladies Ministries when she attended there including a prayer group she loved.

She liked the simple things in life like going out to eat at McDonald’s and getting frozen yogurt with her grandkids when they were younger. She liked crafts when she was able to do them and made beautiful wreaths and fleece shirts for her family. Phyllis did not complete high school but went back to school at the age of 55 to complete her GED.

She had been a stay-at-home mom when her three children were younger. She then worked as a nursing assistant and a hospitality aide in 3 different nursing homes. She was also a personal care attendant for several years. She also traveled over the road with her husband, Jim in his semi-truck and has been to 46 states. In retirement, they continued to travel for several years in their fifth wheel camper.

Phyllis is preceded in death by her husband, parents, one brother and one sister.

Phyllis leaves behind her sister Mona (John) Wolford; son, James E. Vernon II of Mount Vernon; two daughters, Tori (Steve) Brantal of Duluth, Minnesota, and Darcy (Scott) Carey of Galloway; grandchildren: Christina Drake, James Vernon III, Jenni and Traci Vernon, all of Ohio, and Tana Harvey, Michael (Autumn) Harvey, Cassandra Harvey, and Rhea Leach, all of Minnesota, and also numerous great-grandchildren.

Memorial service for both Phyllis and Jim Vernon’s lives will be held Saturday, Aug. 20, at 5 p.m. at the Apostolic Christian Church at 1635 Old Delaware Road, Mount Vernon. Please join us as we celebrate their lives.
