The Northmor football team outscored opponents 297-236 last season, when it went 9-3 overall and 5-2 in KMAC play, and coach Scott Armrose looks to his seniors to help build off a season that ended with a second-round playoff loss to West Jefferson.
Armrose is in his 24th year coaching and sixth at Northmor, and his strategy is to run the wing T-based offense.
“We feel it’s a system that can be easily taught and executed,” said Armrose.
The team runs a 4-3 cover 2 defense, and he said the best athletes are on the field at all times so there is no need for a nickel or dime package. He said they keep things simple so they can play fast.
Armrose got his coaching philosophy from Ryan Teglovic and Colonel Crawford. He said they have been people who he has looked up to, and attributes his major decision-making to them.
While the team lost several high-profile players to graduation, including KAMC first-team selections Andrew Armrose, Marcus Cortez, Niko Chrosto, Garrett Corwin and Dustin Sanders, the Golden Knights are still loaded for 2022.
This year Northmor is counting on a strong senior class to step up and lead the team. Senior Max Lower is coming off a season in which he rushed for 1,291 yards and scored 13 touchdowns. He also had five sacks whole playing defensive end and was named Co-Player of the Year.
“We hope to compete every week,” said Armrose. "The returning players got a taste of the playoffs last year and did not like being bounced in Round Two. That sticks with them."
Northmor kicked off at 7 p.m. on Aug. 19 against Elgin and hopes to continue off its strong 2021 season. The Golden Knights have a full schedule leading up to the regular season finale at Loudonville on Oct. 21 at 7 p.m.
