MOUNT VERNON – Capt. Joe Jurkowitz retired from the Mount Vernon Fire Department at the end of July, Fire Chief Chad Christopher said.

Jurkowitz served with the Fire Department for 22 years.

Safety Services Director Rick Dzik said Christopher told him the community gave strong support for the Fire Department’s annual fan drive. More than 20 new fans were donated to help residents who need to battle the summer heat.

PAK United event on Thursday

Mount Vernon will hold its next Police and Kids United event from 3-5 p.m. on Thursday at Ariel-Foundation Park.

Kids can participate in fishing and archery and enjoy ice cream, Police Chief Robert Morgan said.

Intersections and paving

“We opened the new signals at the intersection of South Main Street and Columbus Road,” Dzik said.

That project had been in progress for the past couple of months he said. The traffic signal now is in full operation.

Paving continues on Pleasant Street as well as Gambier Road and Chestnut Street, he said.

Stormwater project on Sunset Street

A stormwater project to install three new catch basins began on Sunset Street last week, Dzik said. Crews also were installing 400 feet of pipe in that project. They expect to complete the work on Friday.

Catch basin projects help get water off roads where it has been pooling, he said.
