Full moon

Moon stories from around the world

Join the Park District and Certified Volunteer Naturalist and astronomer Chad Ruhl for this hike/program. The event will be held on Friday, Aug. 12, at 8:30 p.m. at Thayer Ridge Park, 7077 Thayer Road, Mount Vernon. Chad will lead a guided hike along the wood’s edge. As we stop at various clearings, we will observe the moon and listen to a moon story. Ever wonder where the saying and song “Man in the Moon” came from? Many countries from around the world had legends, myths or customs attached to the moon. Chad will share the stories of the “Fox in the Moon,” “Toad in the Moon,” “Jack and Jill in the Moon” and more. Although it is a full moon, the Perseid meteor shower is also peaking and we just may see a shooting star or two. Bring binoculars if you have them. The Park District has some to lend. Dress for the weather conditions and sturdy walking shoes are recommended.

Mushroom magic at Wolf Run

Join fungi expert Walt Sturgeon and a member of the Ohio Mushroom Society (OMS) for a talk and “table” walk to look at the mushroom finds the OMS member collected in the park earlier in the day. The event will be held on Saturday, Aug. 13, from 1:30-3 p.m. at Wolf Run Regional Park. Meet at the parking lot shelter house. Participants will explore the many different species and colors of ‘shrooms found at Wolf Run.

Fire and Ice

Join the Park District and the Millwood Church of Christ as we host our Seventh Fire and Ice at the Honey Run Waterfall at 10855 Hazel Dell Road in Howard after a two-year hiatus. On Friday, Dec. 9, from 5:30-8:30 p.m. this event coincides with Knox County’s Food For The Hungry campaign. Catch a shuttle at the church parking lot located at 10900 Millersburg Road in Howard and be ready for the over 600 luminaria at the Honey Run Waterfall. Bring canned food items and/or a monetary donation (accepted at the church parking lot) for the FFTH drive. Dress for the weather conditions and sturdy walking shoes are recommended.
