MOUNT VERNON – John Emerson Capper passed away on Saturday, May 14, 2022 at the age of 83. John was born on Dec. 9, 1938, to Charles and Elizabeth Capper. Helen McConaghy Capper passed away on Saturday, May 21, at the age of 83. Helen was born on Oct. 12, 1938, to Alfred and Violet McConaghy. John and Helen were married for 64 years.

John received a bachelor’s degree from Mount Union and a Master of Divinity along with a Doctorate of Divinity from The Methodist Theological School of Ohio. He spent 39 years as a pastor in the East Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church. John was a member and served as president of the Kiwanis Club of Mount Vernon.

Helen spent many years as a support professional for various companies and organizations including AAA of Mount Vernon and Whispering Hills Care Center. Helen’s wish and desire was to care for her husband and daughters and to provide a caring and stable home. Both John and Helen volunteered for Hospice of Knox County.

John and Helen are survived by daughter Amy (Brian) Wingerter of Worthington; daughter Jenny (Bryan) Shelton of Hilliard; beloved grandchildren Audrey Wingerter, Cassidy Shelton and Carter Shelton; brother Lynn (Judy) Capper of Carrollton; brother Jim (Beth) McConaghy of Beach City; and sister Mary Lou McConaghy of Westerville.

Those who wish to honor John and Helen can make donations to Capital City Hospice or Gay Street United Methodist Church.

A memorial service will be held on June 11, at 11 a.m. at Gay Street United Methodist Church. Calling hours will take place prior to the service from 9 - 11 a.m. The service will be officiated by Rev. Karen Oehl and Rev. David Baker.
