MOUNT VERNON – Carol Ann “Sity” Matteson of Mount Vernon passed away on Monday afternoon, May 2, 2022, at Knox Community Hospital. She was born on Jan. 2, 1941, in Mount Vernon to the late Harold and Marguerite (Newton) Wilson.

Carol owned and operated beauty shops and Roe’s Fashions boutique. She taught cosmetology and food service for several years. After returning to Mount Vernon, she worked as a TPW for the Mount Vernon Developmental Center. Upon retirement, Carol still wanted to help people, so through Touch of Grace became a caretaker of individuals in their homes. Carol was a former member of the Red Hat Society. Carol was a wonderful cook and baker and enjoyed watching the Virginian. Every new adventure Carol pursued, she always succeeded.

Carol is survived by her children, Rusty (Lorell) Yarman of Ashland and Amy Rice of Hayesville; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; her sister, Joan Gaverick of Shelby; and her companion, Charles Williams of Mount Vernon.

In addition to her parents, Carol was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Gerald “Gus” Gaverick.
