CENTERBURG – Larry Edward Hawkins (Larry the Barber), 81, of Centerburg went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on April 22, 2022.

Larry was born in Lock, Oct. 24, 1940, to James and Marie (Swackhammer) Hawkins. Upon graduating from Centerburg High School, Larry pursued his calling and received his barber’s license from Andrews Barber College. He was married to the love of his life, Darlene (Hess) Hawkins for 59 years.

In 1962, Larry took a leap of faith and opened what to many considered to be the greatest barbershop in the state of Ohio. It was in his tiny little shop where hairstyles were not the only thing that changed but the lives of those who entered. Every single child who entered received a height measurement with a line, their name and date on the doorway, and left with a quarter in their pocket. It was a place for men and women alike as all were welcome. A barber was his calling, but it was the vehicle for him to fulfill his passion and purpose, witnessing of the goodness of Jesus Christ.

Larry loved his community and served in several different capacities in his time here on Earth. He was a member of the Centerburg Church of Christ where he previously served as an elder. He also served as a board member at First Federal Savings and Loan and was a former Hilliar Township trustee. He was a fan favorite at the Old Time Farming Festival Pie Auction, often placing crazy bids for his favorite pie. Larry and Darlene were never afraid to lead the way with generosity as they were always willing to offer what they had to those in need. Larry also enjoyed racing, whether it be cars or horses. In his younger years, it was drag racing; then it became harness racing. Later in life, he was always tinkering with a classic muscle car or that new yearling and sometimes both at the same time. He loved his Centerburg Trojans and Ohio State Buckeyes.

Larry was preceded in death by his wife, Darlene Hawkins; parents Jim and Marie Hawkins; twin brother Jerry; and brother Jimmy.

He is survived by his children, Tami (Terry) Hook of Mount Vernon, Todd (Tammy) Hawkins of Mount Vernon and Kris (Jenna) Hawkins of Centerburg; his sister, Deanna Cedargren; grandchildren, Jessica, Jeremy, Brandt, Brynn, Jarryd, Bryee, Casey, Bailey and Michael; great-grandchildren, Madeline, Lilliana, Asher, Brezlynn, Zyran, Aidin, Austin, Olivia, Lorenzo and Emma; nephews, Barry and Ted; and nieces, Bethany, Amy and Meredith.

You never left a moment with Larry without him telling you that he loved you. While he is no longer able to say it to you today, he would ask that his love be shown through these words so that he can one day tell you again himself. “Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned” Mark 16:16.

Please join us May 4 for a Celebration of Life at the Centerburg Church of Christ. Visitation hours from 4-6 p.m. with a celebration of life service at 6 p.m.
