MOUNT VERNON – Storm and sanitary sewers for the city’s Clintonville project have been installed, Mayor Matt Starr told the Mount Vernon News.
“The contractor has been working on regrading and restoring the areas disturbed by the construction activities,” he said. “So they were out there today doing that, moving the earth and getting things ready to go for seeding and planting and putting the fences back up and everything like that.”
The Plaza parking garage has been marked for shoring. A contractor is coming in this week to get measures to provide the city with a quote and begin fabricating the shores for problem areas in the garage.
Foundations are being installed on Columbus Road at the South Main Street intersection for locations where new traffic lights will be installed. One remains to be installed, but it was the one in the middle of the intersection, what he said used to be a pork chop.
“There is a space right there in the middle where we have to put a new foundation for a new traffic post right in the middle of no man's land there,” Starr said.
Street Department
The city repaired three catch basins, installing new tops on one on Follin Avenue and two on Sandusky Street, Starr said.
“We continue to do work on the alley, scraping the alleys,” he said. “The huge amount of rain we have had has not made that easy. So we're waiting for that to dry up as much as possible. And then we'll start using the grader and then adding gravel as necessary.”
The city received hot mix asphalt on Friday morning. Plants had not been running. Weather permitting, crews will start working on repairing potholes this week.
Parks Department
The bathrooms at Phillips Park and Memorial Park were vandalized after only being opened a week, Starr said. Two urinals at Memorial and one commode at Phillips Park were smashed. He asked residents to let the city know if they see or know anything about the vandalism.
“It is going to cost taxpayers to replace those,” he said. “We really would like to stop this vandalism. It really just takes away from the parks’ experience, and it's just bad form.”
Security lights were repaired at Dan Emmett Park. And the first round of mowing began at city parks.
Honors for Memorial Day
Flags were placed on the graves of veterans at Moundview Cemetery by fifth- and sixth-grade students from St. Vincent DePaul School, the mayor said.

Safe Driving
Police Chief Robert Morgan advised motorists to slow down. With the warmer weather, more people will be out on bicycles and scooters, skateboards and walking, Starr said.
