MOUNT VERNON – The city ordered $3,000 worth of fish to restock the lakes at Ariel Foundation Park, Mount Vernon Mayor Matt Starr said.
The restocking will be a community effort, with donations helping to cover the costs. The city received $500 donations from both the AMVETS Post 95 and VFW Post 4027 toward the costs.
Streets
The Street Department hired seven seasonal employees to help during the leaf season and got some help from a maintenance worker with the Parks Department to help out, Starr said.
The first round of leaf pickup has been completed, though some residents have posted on Facebook that their streets were missed. The second round started Monday.
“The next round will be slower because more leaves will have fallen by that time. There's not enough leaves on the ground to really make a huge shift,” he said.
With cooler weather, city officials hope it will help leaves fall so more can be removed. As of Nov. 4, 13 loads of leaves have been picked up.
The city also sealed the deck on the pool.
Staff also winterized the Community Foundation Pavilion and the Schnormeier Events Center at Ariel Foundation Park. Staff also winterized the drinking fountains and all city parks.
Engineering
Work on the underground water reservoir resumed on Tuesday inside the vault.
The city had to temporarily decommission the 2 million-gallon water reservoir to rehabilitate the structure. Interior repairs and valve work are necessary. The project was originally bid to include installation of an access door to the valve chamber; removal and complete replacement of reservoir access manways; reservoir and valve chamber replacement or rehabilitation of all internal piping and valve and related metal components.
