Kenyon Sweeps Senior Day Soccer

In a full day of honoring Lord and Lady senior soccer players, Kenyon swept last Saturday’s action, winning both the men’s and woman’s matches against Hiram

The Kenyon College women’s soccer team celebrated Senior Day, and it was seniors who rose to the occasion, lifting the Ladies to a 3-0 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) victory over the visiting Hiram College Terriers.

Senior Olivia Dion played a role in each of Kenyon’s first two tallies. In the 32nd minute, she scored the game’s first goal off an assist from junior Chloe Webb. In the 73rd minute, she earned an assist on a goal scored by first-year player Talulla Sheridan.

Dion’s productive game moved her season totals to three goals and four assists. She also took the team lead in points with 10 in 15 games played.

A little less than six minutes after Sheridan’s goal, another Kenyon senior, Samantha Hayes, logged her name next to the other Kenyon goal scorers. Following a Ladies free kick on their own side of the field, a misplayed header by a Hiram defender fell to Hayes. Spinning to her right, Hayes dribbled into the box and buried her fourth goal of the season into the lower left corner of the Hiram goal.

The Ladies outshot the Terriers, 18-10.

Kenyon junior goalkeeper Leah Anderson played all 90 minutes, made two saves and recorded her conference-best seventh shutout of the season.

In the men’s match the Lords also celebrated Senior Day with a 5-2 victory over Hiram.

Down 1-0 early on, Sebastian Gaese tied it with a header in the back of the net off the corner kick from Aidan Burns. In the 28th minute, Eamon Dujakovich battled his way down to the end line inside the box. Dujakovich snuck a pass to the middle of the box to find Alem Duratovic. Duratovic’s shot easily went into the back of the net, giving the Lords a 2-1 lead. The remainder of the first half went scoreless as the Terriers continued to hang around with Kenyon.

Only three minutes into the second half, Gerardo Martinez curved a shot from 20 yards out into the top corner of the goal. Martinez’s fourth goal of the season stretched the Lords’ lead to 3-1. In the 58th minute, Hiram’s Keagan Le’Roux pulled Joey Martens down on a corner kick. The referee awarded Kenyon the penalty kick while giving Le’Roux a yellow card for the play. Sam Hosmer-Quint stepped up to take the penalty kick and buried it.

Jacob Lazarus capped off the Kenyon scoring in the 72nd minute when he found his way into the box. Lazarus stopped on a dime and watched as his defender slid past him before putting the ball in the goal. Hiram scored another goal in the 75th minute but could not overcome the deficit.

Nationally ranked Lady Cougars overwhelm Wolverines in home opener, 105-57

The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s basketball team opened the home season in resounding fashion with a 105-57 victory over the University of Michigan-Dearborn on Oct. 26 in Ariel Arena.

Even before the victory, MVNU had received national recognition. For the first time in program history, the Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s basketball team (2-0, 0-0) received votes in the Preseason Coaches’ Top 25 Poll. MVNU has begun its 2021 season strong with wins over Lawrence Tech University and the University of Michigan-Dearborn and received 14 votes in the preseason edition of the coaches’ poll.

In the home opener, the Lady Cougars jumped out to an early lead over the Wolverines and did not look back. After being up 40-29 at the half, MVNU used a huge second half to bury the Wolverines. The Lady Cougars outscored the Wolverines 65-28 in the second half.

MVNU shot 52.2% from the floor and 33.3% from three. The Lady Cougars displayed lockdown defense, holding the Wolverines to just 26.4% shooting from the field and 14.3% from three-point range.

The Lady Cougars were led by Maggie Coe with 22 points on 6-for-10 shooting and 4-for-7 shooting from three. She added six rebounds, two assists and two steals. Rylee Pireu had a solid game with 16 points, six rebounds and two assists. Sage Brannon scored 10 points and added seven rebounds, six assists and a steal. Maggie Coblentz added 12 points and six rebounds off the bench. She was 5-for-6 from the field. Lily Krieger scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Hope Custer scored 11 points off the bench. The MVNU bench was strong on its own, adding 45 points to the scorefest.

Lady Cougars coach Amanda Short, in her seventh season at the helm, said, “Defense is contagious. We saw that tonight. We played OK defense in the first half but played great individual and team defense in the second half. It set the tone for the rest of the game. It was fun seeing so many contribute this game. Coe played outstanding on both ends. We are looking forward to building on this game and effort.”
