MOUNT VERNON – Southside Diner's annual community Thanksgiving fundraiser to benefit Hospice of Knox County (HKC) will not involve the traditional meal this year.
Southside has been a long-time supporter of Hospice of Knox County. In the past, the restaurant closed at 2 p.m. to prepare and then reopened from 3-6 p.m., serving a traditional meal with all of the fixings. Southside Diner employees, who volunteered their time for this event, were joined by community volunteers to serve more than 760 meals.
This year, due to COVID-19 and staffing shortages, the restaurant will host a season of giving all November long, with all proceeds donated to the nonprofit hospice. There will be three ways to give. Round up during your visit on your bill, drop cash in the jar next to the register or make an online donation scanning the QR code or going to the website, myhnco.org.
HNCO’s executive director, Bill Kahl, said, “I am continually amazed by the generosity of Southside Diner’s owners and staff, the volunteers, and the community support in Knox County; we truly appreciate that they were still able to give back in a different way.”
Owners Paul and Beth Neighbarger are carrying on the 22-year tradition of previous owners Roger McCoy and Myron Coblentz. Southside Diner is at 620 South Main St. in Mount Vernon and is open Tuesday through Saturday from 5:45 a.m. to 8 p.m. and closed Sundays due to staffing shortages and COVID-19.
