Sarah Metzmaier scored an overtime goal to send he Kenyon College field hockey team home happy with a 2-1 victory over the host Depauw University Tigers on Saturday.
It took just 1:33 into the extra frame for Metzmaier to score the game-winner. The Ladies worked the ball down into DePauw territory and earned a penalty corner. Bella Kern inserted the corner and the Ladies generated two good looks, but the ball bounced around in the Tigers’ circle before Isabella Meneguzzi gained control. She then fed a pass forward to Metzmaier, who slid her shot past goalkeeper Allie Duranceau as she came out of the cage to challenge her.
The goal was Metzmaier’s team-leading 10th of the season. She also assisted on Kenyon’s first goal, giving her a team-best 22 points in 13 games played this season.
For more than three quarters, the two teams battled back and forth in a scoreless tie and were unable to dent each other's defense. About seven minutes into the fourth quarter, DePauw recorded the first goal of the game, scored off a penalty stroke converted by Maddie DeAscentis.
About three minutes later, Kenyon finally got on the scoreboard, as Metzmaier set up Kern for her ninth goal of the season. The Ladies got two more shots in the final five minutes of regulation, but they were both saved by Duranceau, who finished the game with eight saves.
At the other end of the field, Payton Doan, Kenyon’s keeper, also had eight saves.
For the most part, final statistics were even. Kenyon held a slight edge in shots, 12-9, while DePauw gained a 10-7 advantage in penalty corners.
The victory moved Kenyon to 9-4 overall and 3-1 within North Coast Athletic Conference play. The loss dropped DePauw to 4-8 overall and 2-2 in the NCAC.
