Mount Vernon resident Jared McCann, in collaboration with Fox Sports Broadcaster David Gascon, recently released his second audiobook, "The Dead Will Rise."

First self-published in 2017, "The Dead Will Rise" follows a paramedic as he tangles with a gang after killing one of their members in a home invasion. McCann has chosen to turn his novel into an audiobook to reach a wider audience. This follows his first audiobook, which was released earlier this year.

McCann said this second time around, the process was much smoother.

“David Gascon, the narrator, and I developed a good rapport with my first audiobook, 'Marked for Judgment,'” he told the Mount Vernon News. “With the good relationship we have, and after having a first go in the audiobook realm with 'Marked for Judgment,' the process of 'The Dead Will Rise' was much easier to work through. The challenges were few, but timing due to our professions and busy lives, as well as the editing process, set the book back a little bit.”

McCann serves his hometown as a firefighter and paramedic and in between finds time to pen thrillers. Gascon is California-based, and McCann said they have become good friends over the course of working together.

“It’s been nice having a good working relationship with someone who I also call a friend,” McCann said. “It’s like we’ve known one another for longer than we have, and working on this second audiobook was like we’ve done this more than just once, like we had a good feel of knowing what to expect from the other.”

McCann credits much of his first audiobook’s success to Gascon’s participation.

“My first audiobook, 'Marked for Judgment,' was surprisingly and wonderfully received,” McCann said. “Surprisingly because more people purchased it as an audiobook than I thought ever would, and wonderfully because people told me that when they listened to it, they enjoyed it. Much of that has to do with David and his excellent audiobook voice.”

With this second audio project out of the way, McCann said he will soon return to his pen for a while.

“I’m currently making preparations for another novel and am presently writing poems for another book of poetry, since it was received warmly from readers,” he said.

In the future, McCann said, he does hope to put more of his work into audiobook format.

"The Dead Will Rise" audiobook is available now through Audible, Amazon and iTunes.
