MOUNT VERNON – Mount Vernon local Jared McCann recently collaborated with California Fox Sports broadcaster David Gascon to turn his debut novel, “Marked for Judgement,” into an audiobook.

Since 2016, McCann has managed to write and self-publish three thriller novels in between serving his hometown as a firefighter and paramedic.

“The audiobook came about because I’ve had readers and others interested in my books ask me, ‘When are you going to make your book(s) into an audiobook?’” McCann told the Mount Vernon News.

McCann was surprised when he learned how popular audiobooks are, but he studied up and found a way to bring his novel to those readers who prefer to listen through ACX, an Amazon subsidiary.

Finding a narrator involved an audition process, he said.

“Out of all the narrators who auditioned for it, with the help of my wife and a close friend who is experienced in audiobooks, David Gascon was the one we all agreed upon,” McCann said. “He has a great voice and he does a good job.”

For both McCann and Gascon, recording an audiobook was a new experience, but McCann said they found their rhythm early on and it was smooth sailing from there.

“This process, personally, meant a lot to me, because it was a unique and rewarding process of working with someone all the way on the other side of our nation — and to come out with a good book-working relationship that is another great extension to reach more readers,” McCann said.

As his first novel, “Marked for Judgement,” was his baby, McCann said it is exciting to now have it in an audiobook version.

The thriller is set in Knox County.

“I wanted it to be convincing, thrilling, action-packed at times, honest, suspenseful and something that I prayed people would like and love, because it in a way dictated if I’d keep on writing or not,” he said. “If people didn’t like it or love it, then I’m not so sure I’d be where I’m at today in my writing career.”

McCann and Gascon are already recording McCann’s second novel, “The Dead Will Rise,” and hope to have it out by summer. McCann also hopes to record his third thriller, “Enemies with Me,” and his book of poetry, “Forever I Will Be,” for listeners. The “Marked for Judgement” audiobook can be found on Amazon, Audible and iTunes.
