Congregational Church to address local anti-slavery, underground railroad on 187th anniversary

MOUNT VERNON – Mount Vernon First Congregational Church is celebrating its 187th anniversary during worship this Sunday with the return of its pastor, the Rev. Scott Elliott, from sabbatical. Elliott will be sharing sabbatical research on the church and the area's involvement in the underground railroad and anti-slavery movement.

The sermon is titled “Coming Outerism, Lane Rebels, the Underground Railroad, Love, Justice and Us.” The church is also thanking the Rev. Mearle Griffith for serving as acting pastor while Elliott was away. 

The public is welcome to this sermon and time of worship and gratitude starting at 9:30 a.m. Sunday morning. Masks are required in the church building for those not yet vaccinated. For more information on Mount Vernon First Congregational Church, go to mvucc.org
