MOUNT VERNON – Russell E. McManis, 97, of Mount Vernon, passed away on Wednesday, June 16, 2021, at his residence. He was born on June 17, 1923, in Mount Vernon, the son of Russell and Mary (DeVoe) McManis. 

Russell was a 1942 graduate of Mount Vernon High School. Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served in the Pacific and European theatres during World War II.  Upon returning from the war, he was employed as a glass cutter for Pittsburgh Plate Glass. He eventually retired from the State of Ohio after working for the Department of Corrections and Highway Department. 

Russell was a 60-plus-year member of Mount Zion Lodge #9 F&AM, Past Illustrious Master of Kinsman Council #76, Past Eminent Commander Clinton Commandery #5, and a member of Baldwin Shrine and Aladdin Shrine.  Russell was also a lifetime member of BPOE #140 Elks.

He is survived by his daughter, Valerie McManis of Mount Vernon. 

Besides his parents, Russell was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn (Griffith) McManis; and his brother, Donald Ray McManis.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, June 21, at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, where friends may call from 1 p.m. until the time of service. Pastor Randy Reed will be officiating. Burial with military honors provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council will follow in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens.
