Softball roundup: Payne, Freddies fall in DIII district semi

Sydney Sansom hit a two-out single in the first inning for Fredericktown.

But pitcher Brooke Mannon took over from there, holding the fort for host West Jefferson in a 1-0 victory in a Division III district semifinal game.

Over the final six innings, Mannon walked one batter and another reached on a dropped third strike. She finished struck out nine batters in the complete-game shutout for the fifth-seeded Roughriders, who will travel to top-seeded Cardington in a district championship game at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.

Mannon also made an impact at the plate. She led off the first inning with a triple and scored on a single by the next batter, Peyton Filby. Kaleigh Johnston had two hits to lead West Jefferson.

Miranda Payne matched Mannon from there, striking out 11 batters and allowing four hits and a run over six innings to lead the ninth-seeded Freddies.

Highland 16, Northmor 2 (6)

Savannah Fitzpatrick clubbed three home runs to lead Highland to a 16-2 win in six innings over Northmor in Knox Morrow Athletic Conference play on Friday, May 15, in Galion.

Fitzpatrick finished with four hits in five at-bats with five RBIs and four runs scored. Stevie Asher and Guinevere Jackson also homered for the Fighting Scots.

Asher got the win in the circle, allowing two earned runs in a complete game.

Maddie Simpson had two hits, and Maddie Hoverland had a hit and an RBI to lead the Golden Knights.

East Knox 18, Lucas 0 (5)

Natalie Smith, Cami Bailey and Gracie Sheasby each had big games offensively to help East Knox roll to an 18-0 win in five innings over visiting Lucas in non-league play on Friday, May 15, in Howard.

The trio each had three hits. Smith scored four runs and drove in four, Bailey had five RBIs and scored three runs, and Sheasby had three RBIs and scored twice to lead the Bulldogs, who put the game away with an 11-run fifth inning.

Bailey allowed two hits over three innings, Kayla Finch allowed a hit and struck out two in one inning, and Smith struck out two in her one inning of work.

Lakewood 7, Danville 1

Jenna Myers got visiting Lakewood going with a solo home run in the first inning and Danville couldn’t recover, falling 7-1 in non-league play on Saturday, May 15.

Broegan Staats had two hits and Emily Weckesser had the only RBI for the Blue Devils.

Myers and Chloe Dyce each had two hits and two RBIs. Taylor Saling also drove in two runs; and Saling, Keelie Davis and Dylan Cunningham each scored twice for the Lancers.

Dyce allowed one unearned run over four innings, and Audrey Thomas tossed three scoreless innings of relief for Lakewood.
