Softball roundup: Burchett, Pirates clinch KMAC crown outright

Riley Burchett had three hits — including a pair of doubles — with two RBIs and two runs to lead host Cardington to an 11-0 win in five innings over Centerburg on Friday, April 30.

The win clinches the Knox Morrow Athletic Conference championship outright for the Pirates, who have won outright for the second time in a row after sharing the title in 2018, the league’s first year.

Dana Bertke and Genevieve Longsdorg each added two hits and two RBIs for the Pirates. In the circle, Longsdorf struck out eight batters and allowed two hits over 4 1/3 innings to get the win.

Trojans bounce back with DH sweep

Brooklyn Pankuch went 4-for-4 with two RBIs to lead Centerburg back from a five-run deficit. They scored eight runs in the fifth inning to win a 10-7 decision over Bexley in non-league play on Saturday, May 1.

Kaitlyn Tenzos and Allie Beekman drove in four runs each to lead the Trojans to a 23-1 win in five innings over Whetstone in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday.

Beekman went 4-for-5 with a homer, Amelia Smith scored four times and Savannah Dehart allowed one earned run over five innings to grab the win.

Freddies work late-inning magic

Alyssa Perkins capped a furious late-inning comeback with a walk-off single to send Fredericktown to a 12-11 win over Johnstown in non-league play on Saturday, May 1.

Perkins, Sydney Sansom, Lainey Partington and Taylor Overholt had three hits apiece to lead the Freddies, who trailed 11-6 going into the bottom of the sixth before rallying back.

The Freddies needed late-inning magic in another win over the weekend. Partington’s two-run single in the ninth inning ended up being the difference-maker in Fredericktown’s 6-4 win at Northmor in KMAC play on Friday, April 30, in Galion.

Partington and Gabby Daniels had three hits each, and Miranda Payne had 10 strikeouts over a complete-game nine innings for the Freddies.

Taylor Cantrell had three hits and drove in three runs — including one on a double in the bottom of the ninth — to lead the Golden Knights.

Jackets split doubleheader at Gahanna

Mount Vernon saw both sides of the coin in a non-league doubleheader on Saturday, May 1, in Gahanna.

Layne Cook went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs in an 10-0 win in five innings over Circleville. It was a bounce-back performance after the Yellow Jackets fell 8-0 to Watkins Memorial in the opener.

Emma Jones struck out eight of the nine batters she faced, and Mackenzie Rine finished off the last two innings of scoreless ball against the Tigers.

Carsyn Cassidy kept Mount Vernon off balance with 13 strikeouts to lead Watkins to the win earlier in the day.

Makaylia Schlosser had two of the Jackets’ four hits.

Devils roll to pair of wins

Emily Weckesser had three hits and drove in six runs to lead host Danville to a 21-0 win over Fisher Catholic in non-league play on Saturday, May 1.

Jaylyn Smith had four hits, scored three runs and drove in two; and Grace Gronberg struck out eight in a four-hit shutout for the Devils.

Keura Schilling’s two-run homer in the fifth inning broke a 2-2 tie and gave Danville the lead for good in a 7-3 win at Highland in KMAC play on Friday, April 30, in Sparta.

Schilling had two hits and scored twice, and Camie Newbold had two hits — including a homer — and drove in a pair of runs to lead the Blue Devils, who scored five runs in the fifth.

Maddy Wine struck out seven and allowed three earned runs in a complete game for Danville.

Savannah Fitzpatrick had three hits and scored twice, and Audrey Robinson homered among two hits and had two RBIs to lead the Fighting Scots.

Highland 4, Loudonville 1

Fitzpatrick had two hits and an RBI to lead Highland to a 4-1 win at Loudonville in non-league play on Saturday, May 1.

Emma West allowed one earned run on three hits in six innings of relief to get the win.

East Knox 24, Mount Gilead 3 (5)

Hannah McCoy drove in five runs to lead East Knox to a 24-3 win in five innings at Mount Gilead in KMAC play on Friday, April 30.

Anjel Montgomery was 2-for-2 with three walks, three runs and three RBIs for the Bulldogs, who went off for 13 runs in the third inning.
