MOUNT VERNON – A two-day, in-person ceremony for 540 newly minted graduates of Mount Vernon Nazarene University (MVNU) took place on April 24 and 25.

The college had more, smaller ceremonies to permit an in-person commencement, an MVNU press release said. The events took place in the R.R. Hodges Chapel/Auditorium with strict adherence to COVID-19 protocols.

Traditional graduates received their diplomas on Saturday, April 24, spread over four ceremonies. The Graduate and Professional Studies program celebrated its graduates through two ceremonies on Sunday, April 25.

MVNU President Henry W. Spaulding II lauded the graduates for their tenacity.

"It has been a joy for us to walk with you over the years," the press release quoted him. "I am especially happy for you because you have endured so much to get to this day."

In keeping with the university's Christian mission, Spaulding also encouraged graduates to "thank God for His gracious providence" as well as "those who supported us through the years, especially the last two years."

Two graduates, Matias Malkamaki and Lauren Klopfenstein, received special recognition via the Service Above Self Award.

"The award recognizes graduates for their demonstration of leadership in academic and extracurricular activities and exemplary service to the university, church and community," the release stated.
