Softball roundup: Motalvo, Overholt, Payne lead Freddies by Devils

Jesenia Montalvo and Taylor Overholt keyed a two-run third inning, and pitcher Miranda Payne made it stick, leading the Fredericktown softball team to a 4-2 win over visiting Danville in Knox Morrow Athletic Conference play on Tuesday, April 20.

Montalvo hit an RBI double to tie the game at 2. Overholt followed with a double of her own, stole third and scored on a Sydney Sansom groundout to give the Freddies the lead.

Lainey Partington started the inning with a single and came around to score on Montalvo’s hit.

Montalvo scored Fredericktown’s first run. She singled with one out in the first inning, stole second and third, then scored on an errant throw. She finished 3-for-3 to lead the Freddies.

Taryn Mickley hit an inside-the-park home run to give the Blue Devils the lead. She finished with two hits and two runs, and Maddy Wine had two hits and scored a run to lead Danville.

Miranda Payne tossed a complete game to get the win for the Freddies.

Danville 4, Loudonville 0

Maddy Wine struck out seven batters in a two-hit, complete-game shutout to lead host Danville to a 4-0 win over Loudonville in non-league play on Thursday, April 22.

Mickley had three hits and scored twice to pace the Devils on offense.

Mount Vernon 12, Mansfield Madison 1

Layne Cook went 4-for-4 to lead Mount Vernon to a 12-1 win at Madison in Ohio Cardinal Conference play on Tuesday, April 20, in Mansfield.

Cook hit an RBI single in the first inning to give the Yellow Jackets a 2-0 lead. She drove in three runs and scored twice for Mount Vernon, which scored six runs in the seventh inning to blow the game open.

Emma Jones struck out 11 and allowed one earned run on one hit and three walks for the win.

Newark Catholic 7, Centerburg 2

Kilee Banjoff hit a two-run homer and Maddie Brothers tossed a complete game to lead host Newark Catholic to a 7-2 win over Centerburg in non-league play.

Banjoff’s homer came as part of a three-run first inning.

The Green Waves got three hits apiece from Kylie Gibson and Brooklyn Stanley.

Amelia Smith and Brooklyn Pankuch had two hits each for the Trojans.

East Knox 13, Centerburg 3 (6)

East Knox got two-run singles by Kayla Finch and Nataley Hull as part of a six-run first inning. The Bulldogs cruised to a 13-3 win in six innings over Centerburg on Tuesday, April 20, in Howard.

Finch had three hits, two RBIs and two runs for East Knox. She also went four innings in the circle to get the win.

Kaitlyn Tenzos had three hits and drove in two runs to lead the Trojans.

Cardington 11, East Knox 5

Riley Burchett hit a two-run double in the third inning to give host Cardington the lead, and she added a three-run double in an eight-run fourth inning to help the Pirates blow it open.

East Knox couldn’t recover and fell 11-5 in KMAC play on Thursday, April 22.

Makayla Linkous went 4-for-4 and Chelsey Miller drove in three runs on three hits for Cardington.

Hannah McCoy and Shanda Melick each drove in two runs, and Cami Bailey hit a solo home run for the Bulldogs.

Highland 21, Mount Gilead 2 (5)

Brooklyn Croy drove in four runs to lead Highland to a 21-2 win in five innings at Mount Gilead in KMAC play on Tuesday, April 20.

Croy had two hits — a homer and a double — and scored twice, and Stevie Asher struck out 10 batters in a complete game for the Fighting Scots.
