Ben Riegel continued his solid start to the season with a pair of first place finishes at the Highland Invitational on a rainy Friday, April 9, in Sparta.
Riegel won the discus with throw of 154 feet, 9 inches and the shot put with a throw of 54-9 for Centerburg.
Juliette Laracuente took first place in the 100-meter hurdles (15.48 seconds), the long jump (16-5.25), the high jump (5-4) and teamed with Makenna Belcher, Brylinn Tuggle and Makayla Woods to win the 4x100-meter shuttle hurdle (1:10.49) for the host Scots.
The Highland girls team (130.5 points) finished second out of seven teams, behind winner Buckeye Valley (161.5). East Knox finished sixth (60) and the Trojans were seventh (53).
The Scots’ boys team (102) was third out of seven teams, behind winner Crestview (189). Centerburg was fifth (64) and the Bulldogs were seventh (57).
Landyn Albanese was first in the long jump (19-2.75) to lead the Highland boys team.
Chloe Goulter led the Trojans’ girls team with a second-place finish in the 100-meter dash (13.25), the 200-meter dash (27.47), third in the long jump (14-8.5) and teamed with Kelby Perry, Holly Fields and Ryleigh Schneider to finish second in the 4x100-meter shuttle relay.
Nathan Streby, Taylor Severt and Emily Opfer paced the Bulldogs.
Streby finished second in the 800-meter run (2:01.38) and teamed with Dillon Moreland, Seth Madden and Samuel Whitney in the 4x800-meter relay.
Severt was second in the 1,600-meter run (5:41.85) and the 3,200-meter run (12:39.0).
Opfer finished second in the 300-meter hurdles (52.0) and teamed with Haleigh Landis, Kara Salyers and Alexandria Magers to finish second in the 4x100 relay (53.0).
David Schorr Invitational
Teamwork made the dream work for Fredericktown at the David Schorr Invitational on Saturday, April 10, in Morral.
The Freddies took first in six relay races to earn themselves a sweep at the Ridgedale-hosted meet.
The Fredericktown boys team beat out seven other teams to win with 173 points, and the girls team won with 164.5 points.
The Freddies swept the 4x800. Titus Krabill, Xavier Platt, Xavier Comer and Thomas Caputo won with a time of 8:39.94; and Sydney Wilson, Kacie Rook, Kelly Sapp and Sadie Sanders won with a time of 11:21.88.
They also swept the 4x400, with Rook, Aspen Maggard, Kennedy Fisher and Elsa Hoam winning with a time of 4:38.76; and Platt, Caputo, McKinley and Steven Tumbleson taking first with a time of 3:41.35.
Other relay winners were JJ Grennell, Billy Woodring, Logan Small and Jeremiah McKinley in the 4x200 (1:39.36); and Grennell, Small, Billy Woodring and Justin Woodring in the 4x100 (48.61).
Individual winners were Caputo in the 1,600-meter (4:44.09), Hoam in the 3,200-meter (12:18.00), Krabill in the 3,200-meter (10:39.04), Fisher in the 400-meter (71.73), Tumbleson in the pole vault (13-0), Ashley Cockrell in the 300-meter hurdles (49.98), Matthew Barnes in the 300-meter hurdles (48.99) and Audrey Bouton in the high jump (4-10).
Olentangy Berlin Invitational
Erich Rhodeback made it a clean sweep, finishing first in four events to lead Mount Vernon at the Olentangy Berlin Invitational on Friday, April 9, in Delaware.
Navaeh Williams and Stella Bainbridge were also solid for the Yellow Jackets, finishing second in the shot put (32 feet, 5 inches) and discus (101-8.5), respectively.
Olentangy Orange swept the team competition, with the girls posting 178.5 points and the boys scoring 124.5 points. The Jackets’ boys team finished fifth out of seven teams (87), and the girls team was sixth out of seven (55).
Rhodeback won the 110-meter hurdles (15.11 seconds), the 300-meter hurdles (38.66), the long jump (21-1) and teamed with Dylan Dowell, Matt Salvucci and Damion Blubaugh in the 4x400 (3:31.77).
McKenna Brokaw was also solid for Mount Vernon, placing third in the high jump (4-8).
Lakewood Invitational
Chandler Hartman won two events and Laura Brubaker added a third win to lead Utica at the Lakewood Invitational on Saturday, April 10, in Hebron.
Hartman took the shot put (42-4.25) and the discus (142-10) to lead the boys team to a fourth-place finish (72) out of nine teams, behind winner Fisher Catholic (186).
Brubaker was first in the 300-meter hurdles (50.98) to lead the girls team to a fifth-place finish (75) out of eight teams, behind Millersport (125).
Brubaker also finished second in the pole vault (7-0) and the 100-meter hurdles (18.31), Riley Waggoner finished second in the 200-meter (29.65), Josie Muller was second in the 400-meter (1:11.04) and Jay Figgons was second in the 1,600-meter (4:49.25) for Utica.
BOYS VOLLEYBALL
Mount Vernon faced another day of stiff competition on Saturday, April 10, at Energy Fieldhouse. The Yellow Jackets were swept by Cuyahoga Falls Walsh Jesuit, Cincinnati Moeller and Cleveland St. Ignatius.
The Jackets got stronger as the day went on, taking the Wildcats to five sets in the finale. Cooper Carpenter had 11 kills, Joel Hubbard added eight, Parker Gantt had seven and Mason Boatright six in the 21-25, 25-20, 25-14, 22-25, 16-14 marathon.
Carpenter had 13 digs, three blocks and two assists; Alex Reddy had 32 assists; Dash Lepley had 18 digs; Isaiah Jones had 10 digs; Boatright had four blocks and Weston Porter added three blocks against St. Ignatius.
Gantt had six kills, Reddy dished out 14 assists and Lepley had five digs, but the Crusaders won 25-11, 25-10, 25-7 in the second match.
Carpenter led with six kills, Reddy had 12 assists, Lepley had six digs and Porter served two aces in the opener, a 25-18, 25-18, 25-16 setback to Walsh Jesuit.
BOYS TENNIS
Mount Vernon’s doubles teams took Westerville North to the edge, but the Warriors were able to finish off both matches en route to a 5-0 win over the host Yellow Jackets in non-league play on Monday, April 12.
Alex Behrer and Bryan Sabula fell to Corey Bohan and Alex Workman 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (10-6); and Ethan Jarosz and Toby Boggs were narrowly defeated by Tm Alston and Matt Blake 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (10-6) in doubles action.
In singles play, Quinn Hoffman fell to Shrey Shyamalan 7-5, 6-2; Jack Staats fell to Carter Jones 6-0, 6-2 and Beckett Pechon-Elkins fell to Tyler Jones 6-1, 6-0.
