Johnny Grumney scored nine goals to lead the Mount Vernon Nazarene men’s lacrosse team to a historic first victory in program history. The Cougars doubled up Mount St. Joseph in an 18-9 win on Thursday, Feb. 18, in Mount Vernon.
Jaron Summers added four goals and an assist, and Brett Townsend led with five helpers for the Cougars (1-0), who lost all four games they played last year — their first as a varsity sport. The season was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Goalkeeper Joshua Hageman tallied eight saves, and Jason Laasmar won 20 of 24 face-off attempts for MVNU on the night.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Jevon Knox scored a basket with 11 seconds remaining to get MVNU within two, but Christian Stewart hit a pair of free throws with 6 seconds left to salt away a 79-75 victory for 13th-ranked Marian in Crossroads League play at Ariel Arena on Wednesday, Feb. 17.
Four players scored in double figures for the Cougars (8-11, 7-8), who led 40-39 at the break and by two on a Gichairo Berika basket early in the second half.
But Marian scored the next seven points to take lead. MVNU was able to tie the game on six occasions throughout the second half but never led again.
A Knox basket with 7:27 remaining tied the game at 67; but the Knights (18-4, 12-4) responded with a 6-0 run on baskets by Malek Edmonds, Christian Stewart and Christian Harvey to take the lead for good.
Clay Hilliard went for 19 points, five assists and five rebounds; and Knox added 18 points, five assists and three boards to pace the Cougars.
Eric McLaughlin had 11 points, four rebounds and three steals off the bench; Berika chipped in 10 points; and Kyle Kegley had 13 rebounds and a pair of blocks to go with nine points for MVNU.
Cameron Wolter went for 25 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals; and Stewart was close behind with 19 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals for the Knights.
Harvey finished with 15 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals for Marian, which reeled in 12 thefts as a team.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Fourth-ranked Marian poured in 30 points in the opening quarter and rolled to a 92-49 win over MVNU in Crossroads League action on Wednesday, Feb. 17, in Indianapolis.
Imani Guy filled the stat sheet with 25 points, eight rebounds, four blocks, three steals and a pair of assists to pace the Knights (24-4, 16-0), who opened the game with a 20-3 run.
Macy Willoughby added 15 points and a pair of blocks; and Ella Collier chipped in 12 points, four assists and four rebounds for Marian, which led by as much as 46.
Maggie Coe had 11 points; Maggie Coblentz had eight points, four rebounds and a couple of steals; and Taylor Gregory had six boards and two blocks but was held to three points for the Cougars (13-10, 9-6).
