Forster Seeds of Quality on North Sandusky Street in Mount Vernon has been serving the community for 38 years.
The company has thrived over the decades by focusing on three areas; Fred Forster, the founder, told the Mount Vernon News.
“We pride ourselves on selection, service and quality,” Forster said.
Those are often in short supply in big-box retail stores.
“A discounter tries to cover all bases rather than specializing,” he said. “By trying to cover everything, you don’t cover anything tremendously.”
If you have ever walked into a big store and seen plants dried up and dying, you know what Forster is talking about.
“They have other things to do than worry about plants,” he said. “The day after a really cold night, you’ll find most of their plants in dumpsters because they don’t take care of them.”
Forster’s has the ability to offer a larger selection of plants because they can purchase them in smaller quantities than the big stores.
The store has also expanded to offer wild bird food and accessories.
“If you want to make your own mix, we’ll put it together,” Forster said. “And if you buy 20 pounds, you get a 20% discount.”
