MOUNT VERNON – Brenda Kaye Gibbs, 72, of Lithia, Florida, passed peacefully into heaven on Jan. 21, 2021, with her loving family at her side. She was a former resident of Greencastle, Indiana, and Mount Vernon.
Brenda was born on Feb. 18, 1948, in Greencastle to Mary Lucille (Morgan) and Emmett George Sutherlin. She was a kind, loving and generous mother and mamaw who put her family first. She always said her seven grandsons were the light of her world. She was an excellent cook and baker.
Brenda was a 1966 graduate of Reelsville High School and a member of Big Walnut Baptist Church. She married Larry Gibbs, her classmate at Reelsville, on June 30, 1967. Although they divorced after 21 years of marriage, they remained good friends.
Brenda retired from the State of Ohio’s Mount Vernon Developmental Center where she lovingly cared for residents for 17 years.
She is survived by her son, Andy (Craig) Gibbs of Lithia; daughters, Lori (Kris) Porter of Ontario, Ohio, and Kari (Jon) Johnson of Lithia; grandsons, Luke Johnson, Zachary Johnson, Evan Johnson and Joel Johnson, twins Alex and Will Porter, and Ethan Pederson; her twin sister, Sheila (Jim) O’Brien of Bainbridge; sisters, Wilma Holsapple of Cloverdale and Joyce Hutcheson of Greencastle; her former mother-in-law, Betty Gibbs of Greencastle, with whom she remained very close; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Brenda was preceded in death by her brother, Ray Sutherlin; sisters, Beverly Haltom Trumbo, Sue Salsman Lucas, Kathy Sutherlin and infant Lavonna Mae Sutherlin; nieces, Christina Gibbs and Wendy Rector; and nephews, Jeff Holsapple and Mike Holsapple.
A celebration of Brenda’s life will be held in the spring.
