MOUNT VERNON – Alyce Jean Yance, 95, completed her life’s journey on Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2021, at Knox Community Hospital in Mount Vernon. A homemaker, devoted wife and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she was never happier or prouder than when she was with family.
Alyce was a lifelong Buckeye. Born on Nov. 29, 1925, in Jewett to Charles and Eva (Boughman) McGlaun, she followed her father’s railroad career to Brewster and then Dillonvale where the family established a lasting presence. She graduated from Dillonvale High School where she met the man she would marry, Edward Yance. On June 10, 1943, they were united and shortly thereafter followed Ed’s love for jazz music, traveling the country with the Big Bands of that era including names like Krupa, Dorsey and Tucker. But the bright lights became tiring, and they returned to Dillonvale to raise a family. Ed’s love of jazz remained an important part of their lives until his death in December 1998. The Dillonvale United Methodist Church was where the family worshipped and sought comfort. Shortly after Ed’s passing, Alyce relocated to Mount Vernon to be close to her son Gordon, his wife Fran and their family.
In addition to Gordy, Alyce is survived by her daughter, Ouida Mae (Walter) Hawk of Brewster; and son, Bruce (Becky) of Fort Myers, Florida. Six grandchildren, Jennifer (Marc) Odenweller and Justin of Mount Vernon, Melissa (Marco) Hernandez of Brewster, Jason Davies of Norwalk, Ashley (Ryan) Glynn of Fort Myers, Florida, and Matthew (Pepa) of New York City were their grandma’s most prized possessions. She was also blessed with six great-grandchildren, Kyle (Stephanie), Madison and Micah Schwarzentraub, Mallory and Jake Davies, and Easton Glynn. The legacy was topped off with great-great-grandchildren, Kyre and Calvin Schwarzentraub. Alyce’s smile was never brighter than when she was with her “greats” or was shown pictures and told about their development and mounting accomplishments.
In addition to her parents and husband, Alyce was preceded in death by her brother, Charles McGlaun Jr. of Dillonvale; and sisters, Ouida (Larson) of Phoenix and Mae (Nichols) of Clearwater, Florida. They grew up in a respectful family and each of them shared that trait throughout their descendants.
Alyce’s family wishes to express its sincere appreciation to Country Club Rehabilitation Campus in Mount Vernon for the compassion and caring that was demonstrated during her nearly eleven years of residency.
A private service with the immediate family will be held at the Wilson Funeral Home in Dillonvale on Friday, Jan. 15, 2021. Following the service, Alyce will be buried alongside husband Ed in the Holly Memorial Gardens in Colerain.
