MOUNT VERNON – Carol Elaine Shaw, 73, of Mount Vernon, went to join the Lord on Thursday morning, Dec. 31, 2020, surrounded by her loving family at home. She was born on Aug. 1, 1947, in Mount Vernon, to the late Lewis “Pete” and Ilo “Ruth” McKee.

Carol worked for The Ohio State University Extension in Knox County as an administrative assistant for 20 years prior to retirement. She volunteered for many years as an advisor for the Cottontails 4-H club, supported the Knox County Junior Fair, and could be found every year facilitating the Junior Fair Livestock sale. Carol was also a volunteer for many years with the Red Cross Disaster Action Team in Knox County, responding day or night to support the first responders and affected people. She also traveled to Miami, Florida, for three weeks after hurricane Andrew to support recovery efforts. Additionally, Carol volunteered for several other organizations, supporting her children and community.

At the time of her death, Carol was a member of Jersey Baptist Church in New Albany. She was previously a member of First Christian Church in Mount Vernon for four decades, serving as a board member, deaconess, and participating in the Rachel Circle Christian women’s group. Carol’s faith was very important to her, and she enjoyed reading her Bible and studying God’s word.

Visiting with friends old and new was a favorite pastime of Carol’s, and she was known by many for her warm, caring personality and quick wit. She was a friend to all she met and always had kind words to share. Her skill as a listener and advisor will be missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Tom Shaw, whom she married on Oct. 1, 1967; children, Heather Meister of Pickerington, Jason (Stacie) Shaw of Millersport and Joshua (Naomi) Shaw of Marysville; five grandchildren; many nieces and nephews, and a sister- and brothers-in-law.

In addition to her parents, Carol was preceded in death by her sister, Georgine McKee.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until the time of a service honoring Carol’s life at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 9, at the Flowers Snyder Funeral Home, 619 E. High St. in Mount Vernon, with Pastor Bryan Wolf officiating. A private burial service for the family will be held later. Due to the current health situation, masks will be required and social distancing will be observed. The funeral service will be available on the funeral home’s Facebook page.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
