Goalkeeper Lilly Jakuszewski of the Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s soccer team was named Crossroads League Defensive Player of the Week last week.
The freshman goalkeeper worked back-to-back shutouts at Huntington on Sept. 30 and at home against seventh-ranked Indiana Wesleyan on Oct. 3 to earn the accolade.
She recorded a pair of saves in a 3-0 win over the Foresters and followed that up with four saves against Wildcats, including a pair down the stretch to preserve a scoreless tie.
The Uniontown native has 19 saves in seven games, all starts, and allowed just six goals for the Cougars (3-2-2, 2-2-2) this season.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
MVNU bounced back from an opening-set loss to beat St. Francis 18-25, 25-21, 25-16, 25-17 in Crossroads League play on Oct. 7 in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Nicole Winkler and Ashley Stumperth led the way with 16 kills apiece, and Paige Brenner dished out 58 assists for MVNU (4-5, 4-5).
Ellie Ruby led MVNU with 26 digs, Casey Brunner added 14 and Winker had 11.
Taylor Karlo had 20 kills, Maria Peak had 39 assists and Maile Steckelberg had 21 digs to lead St. Francis (2-7, 2-7).
Indiana Wesleyan def. MVNU 24-26, 25-17, 25-14, 25-15
MVNU started strong, but Indiana Wesleyan proved too tough in defeating the Cougars in four sets in Crossroads League action on Oct. 3 in Mount Vernon.
Four players posted double figures in kills for the Wildcats (8-1, 8-1), including Marci Miller (16), Allison Sparrow (14), Courtney Watkins (13) and Rachel Klitzing (10), who also added five blocks.
Olivia Zawadski had 50 assists and 15 digs, Havyn Gates had 16 digs, Ana Collar added 15 digs and Martina Demarchi 10 digs for IWU.
Brenner had 34 assists and 18 digs, Ruby had 24 digs, Winkler led with 10 kills, Stumperth added nine kills and Mary Kate Harmody had eight kills to go with a team-high three blocks to lead the Cougars.
MEN’S SOCCER
Joshua Orecchio’s second-half goal was all MVNU needed to knock off previously unbeaten Indiana Wesleyan in Crossroads League action on Oct. 3 in Marion, Indiana.
Jared Mount, who led the Cougars with four shots, found Orecchio for the game’s only goal in the 55th minute.
Making his first start of the season, Gabriel Burgos had six saves in goal to preserve the shutout for the Cougars (4-3, 4-2).
Aaron Carr stopped six shots in goal for the Wildcats (3-1, 2-1).
