Teen injured in accident

MOUNT VERNON — A teenage girl was struck by a car in a crash Wednesday on Quarry Chapel Road in Gambier.

The 13-year-old girl, whose name has not been released, was flown via medical helicopter to Children’s Hospital in Columbus and was in critical condition at the time of the transport, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

In a frantic 911 call, the driver of the vehicle stated that he had just hit a girl on his way to work. The caller was reportedly driving 35 miles per hour when he ran into her.

“I hit her and she flew,” the caller told dispatch. The caller estimated that the girl flew 30 feet from the impact.

While remaining on the line with 911, the caller ran to get help and found the girl’s grandparent, who was able to provide dispatch with the girl’s age.

Dispatch instructed the caller and the grandparent not to move the girl but keep talking and reassuring her while waiting for help to arrive.

In addition to OSHP, College Township Fire Department responded to the scene.
